First – let me give credit where it is due. The inspiration for this blog and forum came from @shitmydadsays on Twitter. Irreverent and flat out funny, the posts on that site got me thinking about the things I heard at home while growing up and still, though now long distance, between New Jersey and Florida.
Born in the Bronx, my mother grew up a New Yorker, soaking up the culture of her family and her peers. Although English is her first language, her stories are peppered with a crazy blend of Hebrew, Yiddish and English. Very colorful and, if translatable at all – very funny.
Who doesn’t love hearing and sharing stories about kugel and latkes? Tchotkes and chutzpah are fairly universal – as are schlep and mazel tov.
I’ve created this site as a collection vehicle for others to share their own version of Yiddishology. Not everyone has a Jewish mother or grandmother, but deep down inside, I think we’re all a little bit Yiddish.
What gems were spoken in your house? How did your family say it? I think we’ll all be surprised at how similar our family cultures really are. Visit the forum and share your Yiddishology.
